Hanging with Von Freeman (Vonski!)
I didn't actually sing with him, but he was right there egging me on and giving me tips while his quartet was blowing and in the back as the quartet morphed into other incarnations. The musicians lined up against the wall next to the old pac man machine instruments in tow waiting for their call to jump into the fray a little later.
But the sets started out as they have for the last quarter of a century there at the new Apartment Lounge (how new could it be if it was there 25 years ago, but oh well) with Vonski playing those time tested familiar melodies of jazz standards along with his trio and then ripping off extended solos with effortless freedom of accomplished players half his age.
If you want to see the real deal in action, come on down to the New Apartment Lounge at about 10:30 pm on a tuesday and see the master at play. There is no scene in town more heartfelt or authentic.
In January, Vonski will be celebrating 25 years of jamming at the lounge. It'd be a great time to check him out in all his glory cause it's no telling who will be coming out to those!
